When choosing your kitchen island design, you need to decide what type of features you would like it to have. This choice should be made on what you need to make your time spent in the kitchen go more smoothly. Extra counter space is always beneficial, especially when you are preparing meals for your family on a daily basis. Many people also opt to have extra burners or an extra sink. Drawers and cabinets are usually included in these islands so that you can reach underneath to grab necessary pots and pans. This feature helps keep your kitchen organized.
Kitchen islands work best in larger L, U or G-shape kitchens. If the kitchen is too small, the kitchen island will become an obstruction and hinder easy movement. Big island. Today more people are entertaining and eating at home so a large kitchen island would be very helpful to have around. It can be built so that it can be a workspace and a place for the children to do their homework and eat breakfast. Some can even be built long and lean so there can be as many as eight seats or more and more space around the perimeter. How long would depend on the space available.
One con that was noted was placement of an island can disrupt the flow of a kitchen. The work-flow in a kitchen revolves around a triangle of refrigerator, sink, and range. An island can actually disrupt the flow of this working triangle, causing more issues in preparation, cooking, and cleanup. It is important to have placement so there is not a dead zone in the kitchen, or an area of countertop that goes unused due to the placement of the island.
Countertop material for the island doesn‘t have to match the rest of your kitchen countertops as long as it is harmonious with the room‘s overall design. You may want to splurge on solid surfacing here, for example, and use laminate on the other countertops. A butcher-block countertop is ideal for chopping, while granite or marble works well for baking purposes and for rolling pastry dough.
