Material of the Kitchen Cart and Island: They are available in a wide variety of materials including wood, stainless steel or even granite tops. While the stainless steel carts and islands are the easiest to maintain as they do not get scratched or stained very easily, the wood or tile tops are also durable. You need to keep in mind the overall look of your kitchen while choosing the material of the cart or island. For example, if you have a wood finishing in your kitchen, then an oak wood kitchen island or a white kitchen island would be the best choice for you.
When choosing a light for your kitchen take your time and find a light that will fit the space that your are trying to light. You don‘t want to have a light that is to over powering. But at the same time you don‘t want a light that is undersized. One key design factor with lighting is that you want it to be noticed but you don‘t want it to be the total focal point of your kitchen.
Include a ventilation hood overhead to eliminate smoke, steam and cooking odors if your kitchen island is going to have a cooktop. The range hood should extend beyond the cooking area by 3 inches or more on the sides for proper ventilation. Using the correct fan size will ensure that removal happens as intended. Have a fan capacity of about 50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) for each square foot of cooktop area.
One thing is for sure, after looking at the history of kitchen island furniture the only question becomes "What do we have to look forward to?" Over the last thirty years they have gone from being simple tables to put in your kitchen for extra space, to a vital accessory for your kitchen that can have anything from a stove top to a refrigerator. Will there come a day when a kitchen island is more than just a luxury? Some might say they already are.
Additional kitchen island ideas are to consider using shelf space on the sides of your kitchen island for cookbooks, collectibles or storage. A built-in TV works here, especially if it faces the family room. Or a microwave may work well for heating up after-school snacks and cooking foods quickly.
